I remember being in the living room, very young, with my diapers on and my grandma clapping me and singing flamenco. Music has always been very present in my life. I grew up, mostly with women, my mom, my grandma, grandpa and my five aunties.
I inherited my mama's sensibility and passion for life and my dad's creativity. But my grandmother was the most influential person for me. “Don’t have a plan B” she used to say, which is the most useful piece of advice I’ve been given.
As a teenager all my music influences were powerful women. I was inspired by 'The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill' among other albums. Rocio Jurado too, I used to sing all her songs. And Sade. All of them powerful, different and talented women. I think that’s what I like the most about them, how they have given their own message to the world.
The most memorable book I read is La Sirena de Famaraa beautiful novel based in Famara, a beach in Lanzarote where I always spend time with friends and surf. I remember reading the last chapters on a plane and crying so much
At sixteen I moved to Madrid. That definitely changed my life and my career. I’ve been lucky in that beautiful people have done a lot of things for me in my life so far, but definitely one of them is my manager Q. The first time I got to LA, he let me stay at his house and trusted me when we had nothing.
The craziest thing is seeing how everything I had in my mind is becoming real. Even stuff that I talked about with family that I don’t even remember…and then when it happens they tell me: “Oh I remember you said you were gonna do this.” It’s a beautiful feeling knowing that I'm not that crazy.
Success looks like peace of mind, family and stability. I think to keep growing is what really matters.
I would tell my younger self to believe and listen to yourself more. Don’t let people contaminate you with their opinions.
I am blessed to have beautiful friends at home. They all live basically in the ocean or for the ocean. They always remind me what is really important, not because I forget about it but because the weight of other things that are around me blur the simplicity.
I believe in God, in love and intuition.
I fear feeling lonely.
I celebrate every small thing, lately more, because we live too fast. And I wanna be able to be present for every small moment and achievement.
My favourite word is Freedom
My favourite question is How are you?
EVA RUIZ will perform 20:30 on THURSDAY 16th May @ DUST, Brighton
