Should you size up for ski gloves? ›

Size and fit

For the best performance, a glove should fit snugly and allow enough room at the end of outstretched fingers for you to pinch a quarter of an inch of fabric, whilst making sure your palm is completely inside the cuff so that your wrist remains covered.

The bad smell in your ski gloves is due to the growth of bacteria caused by moisture and perspiration. Washing is not the most effective way to get rid of it, so it is better to use an anti-bacterial spray.

After washing, squeeze out any excess water and allow them to air dry. Avoid direct heat sources like radiators or dryers, as these can damage the gloves. If the smell persists, try placing the gloves in a plastic bag with a few baking soda sachets or coffee grounds for a day or two, as these absorb odors.

Down ski gloves

You can hand wash by filling some warm water with a technical wash, which will maintain the waterproofing. Or simply use a warm, damp sponge to scrub off the dirt gently. You can also machine wash, but do it on a warm and gentle wash and do not turn them inside out.

When they're too small, they will restrict movement and likely leave skin exposed at your wrists. A properly fitting glove or mitten will have about ¼ inch of material at the end of your outstretched fingers. When you make a fist, the fit should not be too tight or restrictive.

It may go easier with a friend's help. Looking at the back of your hand from above, with the fingers relaxed, wrap the tape measure across and around the widest part of your hand, just below the knuckles. Do not include your thumb. Find your measurement on the table for your numeric or letter sizing.

That being said, it's important to not wash them too frequently. You don't want to wear them down on the slopes and in a rigorous wash and dry cycle. Once or twice a season should do the trick. Find out how to wash ski gloves of all types, below.

You can apply a leather balm to get the best use out of your gloves. Start early - it's easier to prevent than it is to treat. Balming your gloves will help them maintain their durability, repel moisture and keep the leather supple.

Lofty insulations make your hands feel like they're floating inside the glove. And when compressed (gripping a ski pole or climbing tool), they lose their thermal dynamics. Compress the loft, compress the warmth. “Thin” insulation retains its warmth when compressed.

Barring all that, and provided they aren't leather, wash them in warm soapy water, wring them out and hang them to dry. Don't put them in the dryer. If you have a boot dryer, those work pretty well on a low heat or air only setting.

Don't wash ski gloves very often. But if you must: hand wash them, following these directions: 1) Start by using a dry rag and remove excess dirt. 2) Spot clean with water only.

When it comes to cleaning Thinsulate™ gloves, here's what you need to know: Fill your sink with cool water (not warm or cold) and add a few drops of gentle baby shampoo to get some suds forming. Put the gloves in the water and gently knead them for about five minutes.

Washing your GORE-TEX gloves

Do not use your washing machine, this process has to be done by hand – fill your sink or a bowl with lukewarm water and use a small amount of liquid detergent, making sure to not use bleach or fabric softeners as this will damage the glove.

We recommend that you size down, as the leather will stretch and conform to your hand.

Skiing is an active sport, and the garments has been sized to allow for this. On the most part we would suggest ordering your regular size but look out for individual fit guides on specific products. Are ski jackets waterproof?

It should be snug without feeling like your movements are restricted. A good way to tell if the gloves are a good fit is that it should feel like a second skin. You should be able to move your fingers and flex with ease without over-stretching the gloves too much.
