A bottle of DIY Irish Cream makes for easy and delicious Christmas gifts (although you’ll want to make a double batch to save some for yourself too)!

Start by pouring the Irish Cream into mason jars or glass bottles. Seal tightly and tie with a ribbon. Be sure you let the person know that they have to keep it in the fridge (and not under the tree).

Ingredients for Homemade Baileys

You need only 5 ingredients to make this homemade Baileys Irish cream.

Sweetened Condensed Milk thickens and sweetens the mixture.

Light Cream makes this creamy of course and helps balance out the sweetness of the condensed milk. You can use coconut milk or even heavy cream if it’s all you have (add a bit of milk to thin it out if needed).

Whiskey is the alcohol in this recipe. Of course, Irish whiskey (like Jameson) is ideal but really, there is no need for a fancy whiskey. An inexpensive brand works just as well (in a pinch you could even use vodka).

Flavor Instant coffee (or instant espresso) and pure vanilla extract add flavor. Some recipes add a touch of cocoa powder, almond extract, or chocolate syrup. We think this recipe is perfect as is.

To Make Irish Cream without Alcohol

Irish cream contains alcohol but this copycat Baileys recipe can be made without alcohol. Skip the whiskey and add a teaspoon or so of rum extract or whiskey extract. Brands can vary so add a little bit at a time until you reach the desired flavor!

This easy recipe is inspired by versions in the McNab Family Cookbook, a little self-published cookbook. The book contains 3 homemade Irish Cream liqueur recipes in my little book with different ingredients (raw eggs, chocolate syrup, and rum). I combined the parts I liked best to create this delicious recipe.

FAQs

What are the ingredients in the original Baileys Irish Cream? ›

Original Irish Cream blends Irish whiskey and spirits with Irish dairy cream and a touch of rich chocolate and vanilla flavours. Pour over ice cream, mix into coffee, or enjoy it with ice for an originally delish Baileys moment.

How long will homemade Baileys last? ›

If stored in an air-tight container, homemade Baileys can last up to 2 months in the fridge. The alcohol helps preserve it, but always sniff the mixture first to make sure it hasn't gone off (trust me, you'll know if the half and half has gone sour).

What should you not mix with Baileys? ›

Baileys can be easily mixed with all manner of beverages to make a simple, creamy drink. The only rule is to avoid citrus or anything with a lot of citric acid, which makes it curdle. That means avoid juices and soda.

What makes Irish cream taste like Irish cream? ›

It's a type of cream liqueur that combines Irish whiskey, cream, and some other flavorings like cinnamon. In fact, you can add your own spin to Irish whiskey by adding different flavors and spices that you enjoy.

What's the difference between Baileys and Irish cream? ›

At its simplest, Irish cream contains Irish whiskey and cream, but many brands, including Baileys, add other flavorings like chocolate and vanilla.

Can I drink 10 year old Baileys? ›

Does Bailey's Irish Cream go bad or expire? Generally as long as you don't subject it to temperature extremes it will last well beyond the official 2 year "best taste before" date. Over time the taste will change and the liquid tends to go a bit darker but only really noticeable if you do a side by side comparison.

Why did my homemade Baileys curdle? ›

Certain blenders (particularly the powerful ones) can curdle the mixture slightly as they 'whip' the cream. To avoid this, start your blender on a very low speed and increase slowly to medium-low. Mix until ingredients only just combined.

Does homemade Baileys need refrigeration? ›

Instructions. Combine all ingredients in a blender and puree on high speed for 30 seconds. Transfer mixture to an airtight container or glass bottle with a tight-fitting lid and store in the refrigerator for up to 2 months.

Can you drink Baileys 5 years out of date? ›

Bailey's says its product has a shelf life of two years. The problem with an older bottle would be the fat in the cream going rancid. How long does an Irish Cream liquor last after the expiration date? Ignoring the expiration date - Irish cream liqueur has a shelf life of about two years, if stored correctly.

Does Baileys have caffeine in it? ›

If you are talking about a bottle of Bailey's Irish Cream, the miniscule amount of caffeine is wiped out by the alcohol.

What happens when you mix Baileys with co*ke? ›

Cream liqueurs curdle because of their high dairy content. Dairy products (such as milk or cream) curdle in the presence of an acidic liquid. Acids have a very low pH, which lowers the overall pH of the mixture. As the pH drops below 5.5, the casein proteins in the dairy ingredients begin to curdle.

Is it OK to drink Baileys straight? ›

Irish cream liqueur is wonderfully versatile. It's so rich and full of flavour, so one of the best ways to drink it is straight or over ice, and just savour the taste of the liqueur. It's also great as an ingredient in shooters, co*cktails and warm drinks like coffee and hot chocolate. Here are a few of our favourites!

Why is Baileys so expensive? ›

Baileys is made from the very best of premium quality dairy cream, triple-distilled whiskey, and fine spirits. It takes about 220 million liters of fresh cream from 38,000 top-bred Irish dairy cows (Baileys Ladies) for the creation of baileys annually.

Is Carolans Irish Cream as good as Baileys? ›

When it comes to Irish cream liqueurs, Baileys Irish Cream is the most popular—with good reason—pick. If you're looking to experiment with some fun co*cktails, we suggest Carolans Irish Cream for its versatile honey flavor that lends itself to a variety of concoctions.

What flavor is closest to Irish cream? ›

Bailey's is a deceptive alcoholic beverage because it is incredibly sweet. There's enough sugar and cream in there to hide the flavor of the whiskey. If you've never had Bailey's, I'm here to tell you that Irish cream flavor is a really close approximation of the liqueur.

Does Bailey's Irish Cream have real cream in it? ›

The Baileys Story

Every year, roughly 200 million liters of milk go into the fresh cream we use for Baileys Original Irish Cream and its variants. We only partner with local Irish farmers since 1974. It's just one reason why Baileys ingredients are so delicious.

Is Baileys the original Irish cream dairy free? ›
